This is not hell. This is Gas Crater. There’s a gas under this hole. Once it started burning it’s hard to extinguish

The villagers in Derweze (or Darvaz) nicknamed the cavern “the door to hell” since it has been burning for almost 40 years. Turkmenistan is sometimes confused with Uzbekistan because of their close proximity and border disputes. Gas spilled in to the cavern by accident and the soviet government decided to ignite to prevent accidents. For a while it has been known that it’s methane gas seeping from a deep pocket underground. It’s far less harmful to burn it then let it dissipate into the atmosphere.
