From the rooftop of the Yuzana Hotel in Yangon, the capital city of Myanmar, the massive hilltop Shwedagon Pagoda lights up the sky.

If the world ever learns how many people were gunned down in the cities of of Burma last week, and how many disappeared in army custody, it will probably be from blogs. Burmese monks partaked in peaceful protests on the streets of Rangoon last week The country, renamed Myanmar by the ruling generals, has no newspaper worthy of the name and so has adopted blogging as one of its principal forms of expression.

Covered with gold. I visited Burma in 1986. At that time you were allowed only one week in Burma. Beautiful country, friendly people, still living under an opressing regime.
